📰 News we're reading

1. Delayed tax payments arrive at County Collector's Office (thecash-book.com) — If you mailed your Cape Girardeau County property tax payment in early November, county staff say more than 300 delayed envelopes have now arrived. Commissioners also advanced a disaster-response agreement that includes the City of Cape Girardeau and SEMO, approved surplus payouts from a 2024 tax sale, and handled several routine contracts and board reappointments.

2. United Way of SEMO opens United for Childcare Resource Center (thecash-book.com) — A new United for Childcare Resource Center has opened on North Spanish Street in Cape Girardeau to help local families find and afford childcare. Run by United Way of Southeast Missouri and backed by AmeriCorps funding, the center will guide parents through subsidies, support childcare providers, and connect employers to a new cost-sharing program aimed at easing workforce shortages and high childcare costs in Cape Girardeau County.

3. Out of the past: Dec. 10 (semissourian.com) — Cape Girardeau’s own history takes center stage with a look back at a local postmaster’s reappointment by President Coolidge and a devastating fire that destroyed one of the city’s oldest homes. The column also recalls a Korean War memorial service and a charitable canned‑food movie event that helped needy families. It’s a snapshot of how earlier residents served, gave, and endured.

4. Aldermen vote down Deerwood closure for Hwy. 61 roundabout project (thecash-book.com) — Cape Girardeau–area residents may feel traffic and emergency-planning impacts from Jackson’s decision to keep Deerwood Drive open during Highway 61 roundabout construction and to share the Cape County Emergency Operations Center. Aldermen rejected a detour-heavy plan after hearing concerns from businesses, churches, residents, and school officials, and also approved major wastewater plant upgrades and other infrastructure actions.
