Rockwood Summit Too Much for Mehlville Boys

For all but a few moments, dominated host Mehlville in a non-conference match-up.

The Panther students manufactured some excitement as they planned to stay hush until their team hit 10 points, and then went wild. The spirit was part of a Special Olympics fundraiser. That momentum carried Mehlville to within two points of Summit, but they eventually lost 46-58, leaving the Panthers at 5-13 on the season.

The Falcons are now just the opposite, at 13 wins and 5 losses.

Panthers head coach Andy Guethle said his team didn’t handle the defensive pressure well, and had too many turnovers.

“We’d been moving the ball pretty well, and I think it's just our guards didn’t have their heads up like they need to be, and see the floor like they need to,” Guethle said.

The Panthers fought back in the fourth, but eventually ran out of time. Mehlville senior guard/forward Adis Mujakic was the team-high scorer for the Panthers with 15 points.

“We had spells where we did it better than others, but they’re a good team,” Guethle said. “Give them a lot of credit, they trapped us. We knew it was coming. We thought we were ready for it, but obviously we weren’t.”

Mehlville fought back to within three at the half and tied it at 29 to start the third period, but then the Falcons used a 10-point run to go up 44-33 after three periods.

“We did have some breakdowns in the first half,” Summit head coach David Schroll said. “Mehlville did a good job of executing on the offensive end. That’s going to happen sometime, but some of that stuff is under our control.”

Falcons’ juniors point guard Jory Woodson and guard Blake Dryer did all the scoring for their team in the third. They tied at 19 each for game-high honors.

“They both have the ability to make shots from anywhere on the court,” Schroll said. "That’s a luxury in high school. It’s great that they’re on our team.”

Mehlville hosts Parkway South (13-5) on Tuesday while Rockwood Summit has Ladue (13-5) at home on Tuesday.
