📰 News we're reading

1. From closure to preservation (stlamerican.com) — A former Scullin School student-turned-WashU researcher is preserving the legacy of the long-vacant St. Louis Public Schools building on Kingshighway with an exhibit at Washington University’s Olin Library. The display, open through Feb. 1, showcases lovingly saved artifacts from teachers and highlights how the Penrose neighborhood school once nurtured students’ ambitions, even as its building now sits blighted and unused.

2. Hazelwood donut shop heavily damaged in Christmas Day fire (firstalert4.com) — A Christmas night fire badly damaged Tony’s Donuts on Howdershell Road in Hazelwood, a longtime favorite for many north St. Louis-area residents, leaving about 20 employees suddenly out of work. The owners believe an electrical issue in a display case sparked the blaze and are urging customers to support their Maryland Heights location while they rebuild, a process expected to take several months.

3. Blood drive brings community together after DC guardsmen attack (firstalert4.com) — A St. Louis blood drive at the International Institute brought residents and Afghan-American neighbors together to help ease a nationwide blood shortage. Sparked by last month’s deadly attack on National Guard members in Washington, D.C., organizers used the event to show solidarity, emphasize shared humanity, and launch a broader “I4USA” effort that will mobilize Afghan communities nationwide.

4. Torts: Defamation-Discrimination/Retaliation (molawyersmedia.com) — A Missouri appeals court has upheld a judgment against a former Lincoln County circuit clerk who claimed defamation, emotional distress, sex discrimination, and retaliation tied to her work, in a case appealed from St. Louis County Circuit Court. Judges found she failed to prove actual malice and that the state, not the court’s local committee, was her employer, closing the door on her claims.
