Suspects take copper pieces from yards in broad daylight.

Several O'Fallon residents have reported their sprinkler backflow valves stolen this month.

Backflow valves are copper parts of lawn irrigation systems that are commonly located on the side of residencies.

According to ce, six incidents have been reported throughout the month of December.

Lori Cronin, a resident in Avondale, said her neighbor caught someone trying to steal her backflow valve two weeks ago in broad daylight.

"There was a parked car in front and a man got out and went to the side of the house and was shaking the valve back and forth," she said.  "My neighbor ran across the street and tried to catch him."

The suspect broke Cronin's valve and caused $400 worth of repairs before getting away.

Bob McLaughlin, owner of Custom Lawn Sprinklers in O'Fallon, said a few years ago customers were calling in about stolen backflow valves, but he hasn't heard of as many incidents this year.

He said if a valve has been stolen it will be hard for residents to miss.

"If it's not there, it's probably been cut off crudely," he said. "They're not taking their time, they're cutting and running."

He added the copper parts are appealing because they can be sold at scrap yards for around $40.

O'Fallon Police Officer Diana Damke said no arrests have been made in connection with the thefts and it is an ongoing investigation. She said if O'Fallon residents notice their backflow valves have been taken they should contact the police.
