Teens Charged With Receiving Stolen Jewelry After Selling to O'Fallon Shop

Derek E. Hamby, of Troy and Brandon L. Meyer, of Wentzville were charged were each charged on May 25 with one felony count of receiving stolen property.

Two teenagers were charged with receiving stolen property after the two sold stolen jewelry to Randy’s Jewelry in O’Fallon.

Derek E. Hamby, of 336 Rockport Dr. in Troy and Brandon L. Meyer, of 305 Open Country Dr. in Wentzville, were each charged on May 25 with one count of receiving stolen property, a felony punishable on conviction with up to seven years in prison. Both Hamby and Meyer were born in 1993, according to court records.

A probable cause statement signed by Det. Dave Thurman with the Wentzville Police Department said the victim reported several items of jewelry worth $2,100 were stolen from her bedroom on March 11. After realizing the jewelry was missing, she discovered Hamby and Meyer had been in her house visiting her son, something she didn’t allow.

The probable cause statement said Meyer told police that he saw Hamby go inside the house to use the bathroom and later saw him pull the jewelry from his pocket.  In an interview with police Hamby first told them he had no knowledge of the thefts, but later told them that Meyer stole the jewelry.

The pair were seen on video surveillance at Randy’s Jewelry and according to the sales receipt, the jewelry was sold by Meyer. Meyer told police Hamby asked him to sell the jewelry for him and that it was Hamby’s cousin’s jewelry.

The probable cause statement said the pair consistently work in concert to commit thefts.

Hamby was arrested May 25 and his bond was set at $5,000, cash only by Judge Terry Cundiff. A case review is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m. A warrant was issued for Meyer’s arrest May 25. Judge Terry Cundiff set Meyer’s bond at $20,000, cash only.
