ACLU Raises Election Interference Concerns In St. Louis County

Some voters said they were given the wrong ballot and that poll workers refused to correct the mistake.

ST. LOUIS, MO — The Advancement Project, a racial justice nonprofit, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri are demanding the St. Louis County Board of Elections immediately address alleged voting interference by poll workers that took place in today's primary elections across the county.

Voting rights watchdogs received several complaints, the group said, from voters who requested Democratic Party ballots but were given nonpartisan or Green Party ballots instead. When voters complained, the poll workers refused to give them new ballots, according to a news release.

Under Missouri law, voters have the right to the correct ballot and can exchange one ballot for another if a mistake has been made.

"The ACLU of Missouri and Advancement Project are deeply concerned when voters report interference and particularly concerned when interference is not promptly remedied," the groups wrote this afternoon in a letter to the board of election. "Hindering a citizen’s right to vote is a miscarriage of the democratic process at its most fundamental level."

Wesley Bell, a candidate for St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney, Tweeted earlier in the day that he had heard reports of similar incidents in Jennings, Maryland Heights and Kirkwood.

Some voters were also turned away at a Berkeley polling place when poll workers left for lunch, the Post-Dispatch reports.
