Attorney For Ex-Husband To Be Deposed In Greitens Case

A judge has vowed to get to the bottom of two mysterious $50,000 cash payments to the ex-husband in the Greitens case.

ST. LOUIS, MO — A judge in St. Louis has ordered an inquiry into two $50,000 cash payments made to the husband of Gov. Greitens' alleged victim about a month before the governor was charged with felony invasion of privacy.

Al Watkins, the ex-husband's attorney, said his law firm received the anonymous cash in January, but Watkins' attorney, Chuck Hatfield, said Friday that the money may not have been anonymous after all. Greitens defense team has speculated that the money could have come from a political operative.

Hatfield, said the fact that the money came from a client means that the client's identity is protected by attorney-client privilege. But attorney-client privilege isn't absolute and the judge didn't seem to buy it.

"The answer to that question needs to be tracked down," Judge Rex Burlison said Friday. Watkins will be deposed Monday, the judge ordered.

"What does it matter if the Church of Satan paid for them, or the NRA?" Hatfield said in court, arguing that the source of the money is irrelevant to the case.
