F-18 Fighter Jet Makes Emergency Landing Near St. Louis

Officials said the plane circled the airport to burn off fuel after its pilot was unable to raise the landing gear. It landed safely.

CHESTERFIELD, MO — An F/A-18 Super Hornet multi-role fighter plane made an emergency landing at the Spirit of St. Louis Airport Wednesday morning after its pilot was unable to raise the landing gear after take off, Fox 2 reports. Officials said the plane circled the airport to burn off fuel, then landed safely.

Originally designed by McDonald-Douglas, but now built by Boeing, F-18s are constructed at plants in St. Louis and flown by the Navy and Marine Corps. It's not clear if the airplane was on active duty or conducting a training or test flight.
