Groundbreaking For New Union Station Aquarium Set For Nov. 4
Construction will begin next month on a new aquarium at Union Station set to open spring 2019. Can you wait?

ST. LOUIS, MO — Groundbreaking is scheduled for Nov. 4 on a new aquarium at Union Station. More than 1 million gallons of water will provide homes to species native to rivers and oceans around the world, with an emphasis on the local riverine ecosystem. A massive shark tank will be the aquarium's centerpiece.
Designed by PGAV Destinations, a St. Louis-based company that has also designed exhibits at the St. Louis Zoo and aquariums in Atlanta and Chicago, the new Union Station aquarium will cost at least $45 million. And the aquarium is just one of the new additions planned for Union Station over the next several years. Others include a 200-foot Ferris wheel and a multi-million dollar fire, water and light show. The total cost for the "family entertainment complex" is estimated to be $160 million. A one percent sales tax in certain districts will cover at least $20 million of that with public money.
"The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which holds members to the highest standards in animal care and exhibition," Union Station said on its website. "The facility will employ an animal husbandry team of marine biologists and aquarists responsible for the long-term care of the animals in the exhibit as well as overseeing water chemistry, animal nutrition, veterinary care, education, staffing and safety."
