Man Killed In South Saint Louis House Fire

Firefighters initially believed the house was abandoned, but a neighbor told them a man might be living inside it.

ST. LOUIS, MO — Officials say one man is dead after a fire at an seemingly-abandoned two-story house in St. Louis Sunday afternoon. KMOV Channel 4 reports the fire broke out around 1 p.m. in the 4700 block of Adkins Avenue, in the south city's Bevo neighborhood.

"This building was vacant. Of course, we go into every fire with the assumption that someone is inside," Capt. Garon Mosby told the television station. "A neighbor actually let us know there was a gentleman that frequented or lived in the building so we went into the building with some knowledge."

The man was taken to a hospital, officials said, where he died. A firefighter was also treated for heat exhaustion.
