Mississippi River At Flood Stage In Northeast Missouri

Minor flooding is expected as the river rises a few feet over flood stage, but the water should subside quickly.

ST. LOUIS, MO — The national weather service says the Mississippi River is rising above flood stage in some parts of northeast Missouri, as far south as St. Louis, but that major flooding is unlikely. Heavy rains across the upper Midwest over the past few weeks have contributed to the flooding, according to forecasters, which is a common occurrence in the spring.

The river is expected to crest between two and four feet over flood stage, inundating a few low-lying fields and roads, but it should begin to subside within the week.

Weather officials are reminding drivers to never drive through flooded roadways. Only a few inches of moving water can begin to carry away a car. Standing water can often be deceptively deep and is capable of flooding engines and leaving motorists stranded amid rising flood waters.
