Missouri Residents Can Fly With Current IDs For Another Year

Missouri is still not in compliance with federal REAL ID laws, but a waiver means residents can continue to fly with current IDs.

ST. LOUIS, MO — Missourians will still be able to fly with current driver's licenses and identification cards, the Associated Press reports. A temporary federal waiver will allow the state another year to comply with a federal REAL ID law that sets stricter standards for driver's licenses, passports, state and military identification cards. Without the waiver, Missourians might not have been allowed to board airplanes beginning in January.

After fighting the federal law since 2005, Missouri lawmakers approved a plan this spring to offer the enhanced identification cards, although residents can choose not to use them. Officials said the state hopes to make new IDs available in the next 18 months but plans to apply for another waiver next year.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
