New York Truck Attacker Had Ticket, Warrant in St. Charles

Sayfullo Saipov, whom authorities say carried out a truck attack in New York this afternoon, was served a 2016 warrant in St. Charles, Mo.

ST. CHARLES, MO — Eight people were killed in New York City this afternoon when a truck accelerated down a bike path, plowing through cyclists and pedestrians and hitting a school bus. Authorities called the attack an act of terrorism, with witnesses reporting the man shouted "Allahu Akbar," Arabic for "God is Great."

The attacker has been identified as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, a 29-year old man from Tampa, Florida. Court records show he received a 2015 traffic ticket issued in St. Charles County for failure to maintain brakes on a vehicle, and a warrant for failure to appear in court. The warrant was served to Saipov in October, 2016, and he posted a $200 bond, which was applied to a $129.50 fine and $70.50 in court costs. CBS News reports Saipov is originally from Uzbekistan and immigrated to the United States in 2010.

The truck driver was shot in the abdomen by police and is in custody, the NYPD announced. Police said that the gun the driver displayed was fake. A joint terrorism task force has been set up to lead the investigation into the truck rampage.
Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a press conference that investigators believe it to be a lone wolf attack with no evidence to suggest a wider plot. Both he and Mayor Bill de Blasio said New Yorkers shouldn't expect a further threat.
