Police Shoot Suspected Carjacker In St. Louis' West End

Police say the man reached for his waistband, but they haven't yet found a gun.

ST. LOUIS, MO — An early morning carjacking triggered a police pursuit that ended in a St. Louis officer shooting the fleeing suspect, Fox 2 reports. Police say a red Mustang, stolen around 12:45 a.m., was spotted by officers shortly after 4 a.m. headed west down Natural Bridge Avenue. The officers gave chase, with their pursuit continuing onto Goodfellow Boulevard and ending on Clara Avenue, near its intersection with Chamberlain Avenue in the West End, slightly more than two miles from where the chase began.

Police say the driver of the stolen Mustang lost control and crashed into a police car before ditching the vehicle and attempting to flee on foot. That's when, according to Police Chief John Hayden, the suspect reached for his waistband. One 25-year-old officer fired several shots at the man, striking him in the stomach.

The suspect is said to be in "unstable" condition. Police have not yet recovered any gun from the scene of the shooting, according to the Post-Dispatch.
