Retired St. Louis Police Officer Killed In Robbery Identified

"This hits very close to home," said St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden, his voice cracking with emotion.

ST. LOUIS, MO — A man shot dead in a suspected robbery near Tower Grove Park Monday morning was a retired St. Louis police officer, according to Police Chief John Hayden. Hayden said in a press briefing Monday morning that the shooting happened around 7:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of Maclind Avenue in south St. Louis.

The 67-year-old retired sergeant, later identified as Ralph E. Harper, had 35 years of service with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and had most recently served in the juvenile division. He retired in 2007.

Harper had dropped his wife off just before the shooting, police said. The retired officer exchanged gunfire with his assailant during the robbery.

"This hits very close to home," Hayden said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I knew the sergeant personally. After coming to the hospital — he was just pronounced deceased a few moments ago. So this is a very challenging time."

Hayden called Harper a wonderful person with a warm, compassionate personality.

Police said they are investigating whether another person dropped off at the hospital Monday morning with a gunshot wound is connected to the robbery. That person was dropped off by at least two other people driving a dark-colored Honda SUV. After a short chase, the SUV crashed and all three were taken into custody.

Police said the SUV had been reported stolen in St. Louis County last week.
