Saint Louis Man Charged For Samurai Sword Murder

Police say 29-year-old Seth Herter fatally stabbed a 55-year-old Fenton man multiple times with a samurai sword.

ST. LOUIS, MO — Christopher McCarthy, 55, of Fenton was stabbed to death Thursday night in a Hereford Street apartment in St. Louis' North Hampton neighborhood, police said. His murderer — 29-year-old Seth Herter, the Post-Dispatch reports — used a samurai sword.

Herter, who lived in the Hereford Street apartment, has been charged with first-degree murder and several counts of theft. After he stabbed McCarthy, his plan was apparently to steal his victim's Chevy Equinox and cellphone and flee to Mexico, authorities said. Police arrested Herter hours later covered in blood. They said he admitted to the killing, but did not say why he stabbed the man — multiple times, according to police.

The Post-Dispatch reports Herter has several minor convictions on his record, including probation for a drug-related offense in 2012. He is held on $1 million bail.
