U.S. Marshals Fatally Shoot Alton Fugitive

Deputy Marshals said the man was hiding in a closet and tried to attack them with a knife.

ST. LOUIS, MO — U.S. Marshals fatally shot a 42-year-old man in Alton, Illinois, just across the river from St. Louis, the Associated Press reported Friday. Officials say the man had a knife and tried to attack deputies as they served a warrant at his home. The man has not been identified, but officials said he had been indicted on federal drug charges and was wanted for violating the terms of his bond.

The United States Marshal Service is a federal law enforcement agency tasked with tracking down fugitives. A spokesman for the Marshals Service told the Associated Press that deputy marshals with the Eastern Missouri Fugitive Task Force found the man hiding in a closet.

No further details were released. Illinois State Police are conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
