City Could Resurface Two Major Roadways at a Discount

St. Peters could complete two million-dollar road resurfacing projects next summer for just $108,000.

Russ Batzel, Transportation and Development Services Group Manager, presented plans to the Board of Aldermen during the May 9 meeting for two major road projects. The plans call for the city to resurface a portion of Mid Rivers Mall Drive and most of Willott Road in the summer of 2014.

The projects, which would take place at the same time, carry a $2.4 million price tag. However, thanks to proposed deals with the federal government and St. Charles County, St. Peters would contribute just $108,000 to the projects. 

"We gotta put some skin in the game," Batzel said after Ward 2 Aldermen Jerry Hollingsworth joked about the small contribution. 

Batzel said the project would take place place in two areas: At Mid Rivers Mall Drive between Mexico Road and St. Peters Howell Road and at Willott Road from Jungermann Road to Mid Rivers Mall Drive. The price tag for the Mid Rivers Mall section will run $1.3 million dollars while the Williott Road section will cost $1.1 million.

Like other road projects in recent years, the city will diamond grind the roadway, replace curbs, replace gutters and make ADA-compliant sidewalk improvements. The Willott Road project has plans for traffic signal improvements as well. 

The funding breakdown for the Mid Rivers Mall Project has a federal grant covering 80-percent of all costs ($1,040,000), a St. Charles County grant picking up $208,000 and the city contributing $52,000. The breakdown for the Willott Road project is similar with the federal grant paying $1,120,000, the county paying $224,000 and St. Peters spending $56,000.

All that's needed to be down to make the projects a reality is board approval.

Batzel said he would present the cost-sharing agreements with the board at the May 23 meeting. If the board approves the agreements with the federal government and the county, bids will go out in the fall and work could begin next summer. The projects are expected to take up to for months to finish.
