  1. This is an update to a story in a previous newsletter: The Bozeman City Commission passed the first reading of an ordinance that would require short-term rentals to sell their license on online platforms. The proposal received support from renters, owners of short-term rentals, and Bozeman Tenants United. The ordinance aims to provide better oversight and data on short-term rentals in the city, with a 47 percent compliance rate currently, and non-compliant owners could face a fine of $500 per day. The second reading of the ordinance is scheduled for Jul. 11, and if passed, it will take effect on Aug. 10. (KBZK News)
  2. Bozeman's ice rink facilities are already in place, but there is a need for significant improvements in the surrounding areas. The Ice Barn, constructed in 2017, requires finishing touches to enhance the spectator experience and provide better amenities. The ongoing fundraising campaign aims to renovate the building by adding facilities like a community room, expanded concessions, locker rooms, and additional parking, with the goal of making Bozeman's ice rinks a regional and national hub for ice sports. 3. Avelo Airlines is making a comeback at the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, becoming the ninth airline to operate there. After being temporarily closed in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency is returning with nonstop flights to Los Angeles, specifically Burbank, California. The inaugural Avelo flight departed before noon on Jun. 28. (NBC Montana)
  4. Over the weekend, several Search and Rescue (SAR) Dogs Teams participated in a Tracking and Training seminar, focusing on intentional training, recognizing when a K-9 has lost the trail, and improving search capabilities. Although the nine SAR Dogs teams are trained in various disciplines, none are trained in all areas. Six of the teams attended the recent training, highlighting the dedication of both the dogs and their human handlers who commit their time to this important cause. (Montana Right Now)

From my notebook:

  • The Bozeman Police Department shared the news of the passing of Nyah, a former police canine. Nyah served alongside Officer Bryan Moen from 2012-2016, contributing her expert nose to numerous investigations. Even after retirement, Nyah maintained a close bond with Moen and enjoyed outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, and swimming. Rest in peace, Nyah. (KULR-TV)
  • As part of the Kids Summer Learning series, Bozeman Police Officer Scott Vongehr visited the Bozeman Public Library and read "The Book With No Pictures" to children. Additionally, the kids had the opportunity to explore a police car, and those aged 18 and under received free lunches through the Human Resource Development Council of District IX Summer Lunch Program. • In case you missed it, the annual music festival, Summerfest, in nearby downtown Livingston will take place on Saturday, Jul. 15 from 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. on Main Street!
