LINCOLN — Two wildfires that scorched 697 acres near the Lake Waconda and Beaver Lake subdivisions in rural Cass County were declared under control by Monday evening.

Some rain Sunday night and reduced wind speeds helped firefighters stop the fires, which began in Iowa over the weekend.

More than 75 firefighters from more than 30 departments had worked the blazes at their peak.

Gov. Jim Pillen and Major Gen. Daryl Bohac toured the area Monday as about 40 firefighters continued mop-up operations.

The Beaver Lake Fire was reported 90% contained, while 85% containment was reported on the Lake Waconda Fire, according to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency.

No structures burned or injuries were reported on the fire.

State firefighting resources, which included a helicopter, were scheduled to demobilize Monday evening.
