1. City seeks public comment on hazard mitigation plan (nevadaappeal.com) — Carson City Emergency Management is asking residents to review and comment on the draft 2026 Hazard Mitigation Plan, which guides how the city prepares for disasters. You can read the plan online and submit feedback through an online form by Jan. 19, helping shape long-term strategies to reduce risks from natural and human-caused hazards in your community.
   

2. Death penalty ruled out in Carson City murder case (nevadaappeal.com) — Carson City prosecutors have confirmed they will not seek the death penalty against resident Da'Lecs Smith, who pleaded not guilty in a downtown Carson City shooting case. A multi‑day jury trial is set for October with an August status check, and the judge outlined a wide range of potential prison terms if he’s convicted on the open murder and weapons charges.
   

3. Carson City Fire Department called to report of fire in attic on Angelo Court (carsonnow.org) — Carson City firefighters were called Monday afternoon to a reported attic fire at a home on Angelo Court off East Bonanza Drive, ultimately declaring the fire out after investigation and overhaul. Crews found only light smoke inside, with NV Energy also responding and some units returning to quarters. The cause and any structural damage are still under investigation.
   

4. Brewery Arts Center director talks changes, new events and more heading into 2026 (carsonnow.org) — Carson City’s Brewery Arts Center is rolling out big changes for 2026, from a new Carson City Lights installation at Mills Park in February to a 50th‑anniversary gala in April. The center is also taking over Nevada Pride, expanding its Tamale Festival and education programs, and actively seeking local volunteers and instructors to grow arts offerings for residents.
   

5. Nevada AG secures order blocking funding hold on FEMA grant (kolotv.com) — From Carson City’s attorney general reports a federal court order blocking Trump administration limits on two FEMA grants that help fund the state’s emergency management and homeland security efforts. The ruling restores flexibility over more than $19 million for preparedness projects, with Nevada joining several other states in the successful challenge.
