Amherst Fire Chief Asks Public Not to Text and Drive
More than 400 people have signed a special Facebook page pledging that they will no longer text and drive.

Amherst Fire Chief Mark Boynton is asking members of the public to pledge not to text and drive one week after retired fire chief John Bachman was killed in a motor vehicle accident, according to the Union Leader.
The newspaper reported that Boynton and Lt. Chris Buchanan posted a form on the department’s website asking members to pledge to not text and drive. More than 400 people have also pledged not to text and drive on a special pledge page that Boynton posted on Facebook.
Bachman was killed on Dec. 23 when he went to check his mail and was struck by a vehicle operated by Travis Hobbs, 20, of Mont Vernon who later told police he thought he hit a snow bank. Two other men, John Ferraro, 62, of Amherst and Eric L'Ecuyer of Merrimack, were also killed in motor vehicle crashes in December.
