Amherst Native Runner Up for MLB Executive of Year

Exec lost out to Ben Cherington, another New Hampshire native, for top honors.

Amherst native Neal Huntington, general manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates, found himself near the top of the list of Major League Baseball executives this year, coming in as runner up for Sporting News' MLB Executive of the Year on Monday, according to a story in the Union Leader.

Huntington, who grew up on a dairy farm in Amherst and graduated from Milford High School, has been credited with acquiring multiple players who helped contribute a 15-win improvement over 2012, snapping the Pirates streak of 20 years without a playoff berth.

Huntington was runner up to Ben Cherington, another New Hampshire native and GM for the Boston Red Sox. Cherington, of Meriden, a village in Plainfield New Hampshire received the most votes for this year's Executive of the Year – determined by a 31-member board. Huntington earned nine votes to Cherington's 15.
