Amherst's 4th Of July Fireworks Have Been Canceled

AMHERST, NH — July 4 events across the country will not look the same this year thanks to the new coronavirus.

Many communities have been forced to cancel or postpone their annual Fourth of July events, including Amherst. The decision was made by the Amherst Fourth of July Committee in May. The organization was considering an alternative date but that is no longer an option.

"While we will miss our annual community festivities as well as the chance to incorporate additional celebrations this year as planned- the recognition of our graduating high school seniors, heath care workers and teachers, the safety of our citizens is paramount," the org said. "Our thanks to the Amherst Fourth of July Committee and everyone involved for their flexibility and preparedness during these uncertain times."

Past events have included a parade and fireworks.

The town beach, however, reopened June 6, and while there is limited capacity, residents can enjoy kayaking, paddle boarding, and other activities. The recreation department has updates weekly on its website of things to do in town.
