“Data skills can be used in various jobs and industries. What are the chances someone with a job will be sitting at a desk with computer doing data-related work in the future? Very high. It is super practical,” said Program Coordinator Prof. Kim Seefeld. “The jobs will be there, even if you're not a 'data analyst' per se. Honestly to some extent what used to be an administrative assistant could now be considered an analyst for a lot of roles.”
Prof. Seefeld recommended “Data 101” and “Data 205” as a great place to begin for summer students.
“Data 101: Intro to Data Analytics’ is my usual basic class on what the field is about, and is now incorporating more and more AI as well. It’s an intro to the Data Analytics program, and what it covers, but it’s also for anyone just curious or interested in the field.”
The other class, “Data 205: Data Visualization”, is a “Tableau” Skills class, “However it's not just about Tableau but about communication visually, with data.”
Schedule
Data 101 is offered the first 6-week summer term, May 19 – June 28.
Data 205 is offered the second 6-week summer term, June 30 – August 9.
Both classes are available 100% online.

Seefeld noted these skills may really come in handy with the continued integration of AI into the workforce. “The entire world economy is heading very fast toward a world of AI which is almost completely based on data, and the Data 101 course will now incorporate some AI.”
