Firefighters Battle 3-Alarm Fire On Eastern Avenue In Amherst
Amherst officials say hoarding conditions made it difficult to search for occupants. One building collapsed shortly after crews arrived.
AMHERST, NH — Amherst Fire Rescue and police responded to a reported structure fire Friday. When they arrived, they had heavy fire at the Eastern Avenue address.
Units from Amherst and mutual aid towns were dispatched to 31 Eastern Avenue for a structure fire with a report of trapped occupants. Engine 5 arrived on scene to heavy fire and a garage collapse.A woman who was home at the time of the fire was assisted to a waiting Amherst ambulance for medical evaluation and refused transport.
The original structures had collapsed, and the piles of debris were burning. Firefighters began to extinguish the fire in the house and protect adjacent structures on each side.

Amherst Fire said heavy hoarding conditions made searching for occupants difficult; no other occupants were located.
Firefighters also faced a brush fire growing from windy conditions, and a second alarm was immediately struck to bring additional resources. Given the large burning area outside, a third alarm was struck. About an hour into the incident, the fire was brought under control, and heavy overhaul and mop-up were completed. No other injuries were reported.

Amherst Public Works brought an excavator to the scene to move the debris field and fully extinguish the fire.
