Homestead Hosting 'Thank You' Barbecue on Cash Mob Anniversary
Last year's cash mob convinced the business owners to stay in business.
A local business was devastated by two back-to-back break-ins, but a devoted community following lifted them back up and gave them a renewed spirit.
The Homestead Grocery & Deli in Amherst had almost $7,000 taken in the burglaries in July 2012, which included about $500 in SHARE Outreach donations. The owners were devastated and considered selling their business, but loyal customers made sure that didn’t happen.
A “cash mob” was organized, which has a large group of customers pledge to shop at a business during a certain time period. Over 600 people came to show their support for The Homestead that day.
This Friday marks the anniversary of that remarkable event, and the owners want to thank the community for helping them through that difficult time.
The Homestead is organizing a free barbecue to show their appreciation for such an outpouring of love and support.
“It was a huge event for myself and my family,” said co-owner Ralph Melchionda. “We didn't want to let this day pass without a remembrance of one kind or another. It is still near and dear to our hearts what happened.”
They will have a hot dogs, hamburgers, and Jakes ice cream available for free from 2-6 p.m. on Friday, August 9. T-Shirts with the Cash Mob Banner displayed on the front will be given to the first hundred people to attend.
A non-mandatory donation of $5 to SHARE Outreach is suggested.
“We wanted to remember that day in a special way, and also raise a little bit of money for SHARE,” said Melchionda. “We feel we are a part of the community and want to give back in any way we can. So come on down, bring your appetites and we will have some fun.”
