On July 20 from 2-6 PM, Nashua Community College is hosting a Transportation Career Open House focused on Industry & Transportation degree and certificate options on campus, and how students can prepare for their future careers.

At open house, visitors can tour campus and learn more about Aviation Technology, Collision Repair, Automotive, Automotive-Mazda Pathway, and Honda Automotive Technology programs.

Get career ready at NCC

“Students completing the training in any of our Transportation Technology Programs are prepared to begin their career. There are so many career paths for graduates of our programs,” said Professor Karl Wunderlich, Industry & Transportation department chair at NCC. Graduate job roles include auto technician, collision repair technician, service advisor, estimator, sales, parts person, he said, “Some students continue their education and earn an advanced degree.”

New talent is in high demand, said Douglas Mitchell, professor and program coordinator of Aviation Technology at NCC, “Just about every type of maintenance is hurting, it’s a national shortage. It’s a matter of an aging workforce; there are fewer people going into it, but there’s a major need.”

Hands-on learning with ‘live work’

NCC is unique in that students get the chance to engage in live work in the automotive lab, meaning they are fixing real problems with real vehicles.

“Students get the opportunity to diagnose and repair problems on customer vehicles,” said Wunderlich, noting that customers typically comprise faculty, staff, and students. “This approach allows the students to see the same type of repair and conditions as they will once working in industry. It also provides the students that feeling of pride and knowing that they are helping someone out that maybe could not afford to have it repaired elsewhere.”

College to career support

College faculty work closely with industry partners to keep each program curriculum on the cutting edge and to connect students with local employers.

“We provide paid internship and work coop opportunities with the assistance of our Industry Partners to all students,” said Michele Doyle, Automotive Program Support Specialist at Nashua Community College.

“This allows students to gain valuable work experience working with local employers, and often results in the students having full time employment upon graduation,” said Wunderlich.
