Patch Editor's Top Picks For 2012

Here are some of my favorite stories on Amherst Patch this year and why I love 'em.

Community Comes Together For The Homestead

This story is the prime example of the great things a community can do when it comes together for a common cause. The Homestead Grocery & Deli was burglarized twice in two weeks, and the owners were thinking about closing up shop. Instead, loyal customers came in droves to support them during a "cash mob" demonstration to help recoup there losses and convince them to stay. The Homestead decided to stay open and continue to be a beloved fixture in the Amherst community.

Sharing A Miracle

Jennifer D'Auteuil's has an amazing story of her family's struggles with her son's isolating disease, which has a very happy ending. Drew D'Auteuil has overcome the worst of his illness, and now Jennifer has a book to share their experience for others going through similar situations. She is one of the many parents doing great things for their children, including Amherst mother Paula Garvey and the Dreher family.

One Tough Principal

One of the joys of being in journalism is learning lesser-known facts about people I meet in the community. Talking to Amherst Middle School principal Porter Dodge about his passion for martial arts and Pankration was truly a great experience. There is nothing better than listening to somebody talk about the things they love, and Dodge REALLY loves martial arts. Another great entry to check out in my "Off The Clock" feature list is about an Amherst firefighter who moonlights as a talented DJ.

I Shouldn't Quit My Day Job

Some of the most fun I've had this year was filming my "Don't Quit Your Day Job Series" at local businesses in Amherst. Much like Mike Rowe in the television show "Dirty Jobs," I tried my hand at many professions including cake-making, manicures, dental drilling and dollhouse-making. Trust me. There are a lot more coming in 2013.

The Earley's Run Together

Nothing makes this editor happier than seeing somebody overcome an obstacle and use it as a motivator to push themselves. Kathy Earley survived Melanoma cancer and is joined by her family as they run marathons and help spread awareness of this form of cancer.

A Song Against Suckers

Sandy Lafleur has been hit hard by Lyme disease, and decided to use a different method to prevent others from getting it: rap music. Folk meets the streets in this interesting and informative feature.

Building Cave Girls

There are so many people in the community who do great things with little recognition. , is one of those people. She helps build young female athletes both inside and out on the field and in the classroom.

News Flash: Politicians lie. The funniest fib this year had to be from Kerry Marsh, Rick Perry's former NH campaign manager, after the conclusion of the New Hampshire primary. Remember when Perry looked absolutely loopy during a speech he made to conservative group Cornerstone Action? The one where he appeared to be drunk, or on some sort of drugs? Marsh claimed that he was on a "religious high" from an earlier gathering with religious leaders. Makes total sense to me.
