Rescuers Credited With Saving Amherst Hiker's Life

56-year-old started having difficulty breathing and abdominal pain while hiking Pack Monadnock.

A team of emergency workers who carried an Amherst man off of Pack Monadnock after he fell ill while hiking this weekend are being credited with saving his life.

On Sunday, Oct. 27, Edward Braczyk, 56, of Amherst, was hiking the Marion Davis Trail on Pack Monadnock Mountain in Peterborough when he reportedly began experiencing abdominal pains and difficulty breathing, according to a press release from New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Peterborough Fire Department contacted Fish and Game shortly before 2 p.m. alerting them to the situation and their paramedics' assessment that Braczyk was experiencing some sort of cardiac event.

Fish and Game Conservation Officers, Peterborough Fire & Rescue and DRED Division of Parks and Recreation staff began and expedited the carryout, bringing Braczyk off the mountain in a litter carrying him over a half mile of rough terrain to an ambulance waiting at the Miller State Park parking lot. From there they transferred him by ambulance to Catholic Medical Center in Manchester.
