“Having served as Selectman for the past 10 years, I now want to spend more time concentrating on my family, which has taken a backseat during these 10 years. Effective April 1, I will be resigning my position as Selectman. I want to say thank you, to all residents who have supported me over the years and to thank all of our town employees and volunteers. As I have said before, we have some of the most dedicated employees and volunteers that you could as for.”

Bowler could not be reached last night for further comment.

Dwight Brew, who was re-elected earlier this month, was selected as the new chairman of the board.

Amherst selectmen were caught off guard by the news as it was announced at the beginning of the meeting. Brew said he had no idea that they would have to begin a search for a new selectman last night.

Newly-elected selectman John D’Angelo said the resignation news was a surprise, but said that Bowler did what was best for the town.

“I think Bruce evaluated the result of the vote and decided that the town was sending a message and he didn’t want to stand in the way,” said D’Angelo. “He made a good decision for the benefit of the town.”

Selectman Tom Grella said he had talked to Bowler not long before their 6:30 p.m. meeting, and had gotten any indication that he was resigning. Grella said that he appreciated the work and support he has put in with town volunteers during his time as a selectman.

Now-retired selectman George Infanti said he was shocked by the news, and cautioned the board to make the selection process as transparent as possible.

The board must now appoint a replacement member until the next round of elections in March 2014. The deadline for applicants will be Thursday, April 4 at 4 p.m.

Those interested in applying for the vacant selectman seat can contact Town Administrator Jim O’Mara at 673-6041 ex. 209 or jomara@amherstnh.gov. More information is available at amherstnh.gov.
