Teenager Rescued After Falling Through Thin Ice On Amherst Pond: Watch

Two people, who witnessed a teen fall into frigid water, grabbed a canoe, began the rescue. Firefighters, police pulled the canoe to shore.

AMHERST, NH — Amherst Fire, EMS, and police responded to a report of a person who had fallen through the ice on Honey Pot Pond Monday around 4:20 p.m.

While en route, responders were advised a teenager was skating when he fell through the thin ice. Two people nearby saw the skater fall through the ice, grabbed a canoe, and attempted to reach the victim.

Emergency personnel set up on Cross Road and requested additional apparatus and ambulances.

Two rescuers who spotted the distressed teen pulled him into the canoe. The canoe broke through the ice but could not get to the shore. However, everyone was out of the water.

Amherst Fire quickly put on water rescue gear, set up ropes, and made efforts to get to the canoe. Rescuers struggled as ice continually broke around them as they tried to reach the people in the canoe.

After about 30 minutes, the canoe with all three people was pulled to shore by firefighters and police officers. As soon as the teen reached shore, EMS personnel began treatment for cold exposure and brought him to a waiting ambulance.

The two people who had brought the canoe to rescue the teen were uninjured in the incident. Responders spoke about how lucky the teenager was that someone saw him go through the ice and rescued him from the frigid water that could have quickly made him unconscious.

People should be aware that ice is just beginning to form on ponds and lakes and is not safe this early in the season.
