What's Open and Closed on Labor Day in Amherst?

Today is Labor Day. Though Labor Day has become a day of barbecues and celebrating the end of summer, the creation of Labor Day is an observance of the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

According to the Department of Labor website: "The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on Sept. 5, 1883.

"In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a 'workingmen's holiday' on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country."

Closed in observance of Labor Day will be:

All Town Offices are closed in honor of Labor Day (state offices as well). The Town Administrator's office will re-open Tuesday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., the Town Clerk will re-open Tuesday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and 4:30-6:30 p.m., the Tax Collector will re-open Tuesday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Schools in SAU #39 will have no classes on Monday. Classes will resume on Tuesday.

The Amherst Town Library will remain closed as it has been all weekend. Regular hours resume Tuesday from 9:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. And Sunday hours resume Sept. 8 from 1-5 p.m.
