$5.2M Sought For Infection Control Upgrades At Hillsborough County Nursing Home

The Hillsborough County Nursing Home could be the second to receive newly available federal money for infection control upgrades, though its $5.2 million request is far less than the $25.2 million given to Sullivan County for its nursing home improvements last month.
The Governor’s Office for Emergency Relief and Recovery will ask the Executive Council on Wednesday to approve the money for Hillsborough County to make capital improvements to its 300-bed nursing home, including updating its ventilation system and upgrading resident bathrooms to improve infection control, according to GOFERR’s request to the council.

The funding would come from the $50 million Nursing Home Infrastructure Fund the council approved in July to help counties make their long-term care facilities safer for residents vulnerable to public health risks. The pandemic illustrated the particular risks in those settings.
Of the state’s 2,751 COVID-19 deaths, 1,213, or 44 percent, were in long-term care facilities, which includes private and county sites, according to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard.

Under the grant program, counties can receive reimbursement for up to 40 percent of their project costs. The funding was available in two rounds. The deadline for the first, for projects that were ready to go, closed Sept. 9. The second, for projects that are in the early stages of planning, closed Tuesday.
Half the $50 million fund went to Sullivan County in October for expansion, ventilation system improvements, and other changes to meet infection control goals, the governor’s office said in announcing the award.
