Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- A break developed in the cold case of a murdered woman found 51 years ago in Bedford. Through genetic testing, investigators identified the body of 26-year-old Katherine "Kathy" Ann Alston of Boston, who was found murdered in a "wooded area at the end of Kilton Road near the Route 101 bypass on Oct. 6, 1971." She never showed up at Logan Airport when her family moved to Texas and was never reported missing. New Hampshire investigators want to bring her murderer to justice, and are asking anyone who knew Alston, a roommate, David Cormieror, or who went to Boston University, including anyone living in Dorchester, Boston and Somerville between 1963 and the fall of 1971, to contact the New Hampshire cold case unit: (WMUR)
- The Bedford Fire Department assisted state troopers with a car crash on I-293 Sunday night. The right lane of Route 293 North was closed to traffic at 8:30 p.m. for two hours to remove a heavily damaged silver Honda Civic from the woods behind the guard rail. The driver of the car, Marvin Collins, 43, of Manchester, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, officials said. He was later charged "with driving while intoxicated and operating on a suspended license." (Bedford Patch)
- We are happy to report that Opal, "who takes Beagle-ing very seriously," is recovering from her recent back surgery. The Animal Rescue League of N.H. said she was "a little ouchy (recovery can have some setbacks)" and is "taking it one day at a time," in a recent social media post. Opal is a sweet older beagle who was brought to the shelter in Bedford when her family was unable to care for her. She was in pain and needed expensive back surgery.
