Bedford Slightly Over 2013 Snow Removal Budget, On Track in 2014

Last year, Bedford officials budgeted for 25 winter storms.

Though that looked like a safe bet heading into December, a few late-year weather fronts pushed the total to 26 storms, and the town slightly over its projected snow removal budget, according to Jim Stanford, Bedford's Director of Public Works.

Since Bedford works on a calendar-year budget, the 2014 snow removal allocation is included in the budget that will be handed to voters in March for approval.

"So far, in 2014, our snowfall totals are not out of the ordinary for January, but the low, early morning temperatures has necessitated treating the roads for the morning commute on daily basis," said Stanford. "We expect to have more maintenance tonight and tomorrow morning, but after that it appears that we are getting into a warmer pattern."

Stanford says despite the additional road treatments, he has no reason for concern at this point.

"Our budget concern is typically in second half of the year going into October, November and December, especially when the January through March events are above normal," he said.
