Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. Bedford Police Chief John Bryfonski testified before the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee on Wednesday to support a bail reform bill. The bill would not provide bail for a person who was "charged with a felony, Class A misdemeanor, or drunk driving charge while out on bail for a similarly serious crime." Others who don't support the bill argue that " the current bail system doesn't need reform." Chief Bryfonski said "if the current bail system was working properly, he would not be attending." (InDepthNH.org)
  2. A building proposed for Market and Main is still too tall, town officials say. Developers are facing pushback over the height of a planned 65-unit senior independent living building at Market and Main, "with some planning board members saying architectural drawings are deceptive." The proposed senior living condos would need waivers to be built in Bedford's performance zone district, which "does not allow elderly housing" or buildings over 60 feet high. (Yahoo)
  3. A shoutout to Cora Steichen of Bedford High School, who was awarded an Animal Welfare Institute scholarship! The scholarship recognizes 14 students who are actively involved in helping animals "in their school and community," and who are plan to continue to help animals in their college studies. Congratulations! (Animal Welfare Institute)
  4. Eric Dubowik is the Bedford Fire Department's new Deputy Chief of Operations! A member of the BFD since 2006, Deputy Dubowik has served as "a Firefighter, Fire Inspector, Lieutenant and Captain." If you see Deputy Dubowik around town, be sure to congratulate him!
