Divers Recover Body Of A Man Who Jumped In The Merrimack River Tuesday

Witnesses saw a man jump from the Granite Street Bridge in Manchester and quickly lost sight of him as the fast current swept him away.

MANCHESTER, NH — New Hampshire Fish and Game divers and Manchester firefighters located the body of a man who jumped from the Granite Street Bridge into the Merrimack River Tuesday.

Manchester Police, fire, AMR ambulance, and State Police responded to a report of a man who jumped off the Granite Street Bridge into the Merrimack River on Tuesday.

Responders arrived at about 7 a.m., and several witnesses said the man jumped from the South side of the eastbound span. Witnesses on the bridge confirmed they saw him in the water but eventually lost sight of him. Video surveillance from a nearby business also confirmed the victim had jumped into the water.

Manchester firefighters launched two boats while state police, Manchester Police, and other resources searched the river's shoreline. Police also launched a drone, in an effort to, locate the man.

Fish and Game was notified of the incident and activated their dive team, which responded to the scene.

Conservation Officers launched two boats to assist in the search effort already underway by Manchester firefighters. Divers tethered to a boat were pulled down the river to search water that was 38 degrees and up to 20 feet deep.

A side-scan sonar was deployed from a Fish and Game boat searching for items on the bottom of the river.

Divers located the man in an area under the pedestrian bridge and worked with firefighters to remove the body and bring the victim to the shore.

The state medical examiner was summoned to the scene. Manchester police are not releasing the name at this time, pending notification of the next of kin.

Information gathered at the scene indicates the victim was in his early sixties.
