Missing 80 Year-Old Manchester Man Found Alive In Wooded Area

Leo Dion, who has dementia, left a condo and was out in the frigid temps overnight; rescuers found him alive and transported him to CMC.

MANCHESTER, NH — The elderly Manchester man with dementia who had been missing from the Valley West Condo area since 11 p.m. last night was found alive at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday in a wooded area.

Dozens of firefighters and police officers had been searching for Leo Dion who wandered away from the condo last night. He wasn't discovered missing until early this morning, and authorities were notified. Searchers found Dion a short distance into the woods at the end of Bartlett Street, and it appears he may have fallen after going over a guardrail.

Crews used a Stokes basket, hooked it up to an MFD ATV, and used the winch to bring him up the embankment.

Sources indicate he may have suffered at least one broken bone, and had cold exposure-related issues. At this time it appears that based on his current condition he is expected to survive.

A command post set up near the end of Douglas Street was used to coordinate the search.

Searchers used ATVs, horses, and multiple vehicles, also going door to door and searching backyards.

Several police officers went door to door in the neighborhood talking to people and looking for video surveillance.
