Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- If you spent your summer days as a kid tossing bean bags — it may now pay off! The Bedford Rotary Club is hosting its first Cornhole Tournament at Murphy's Taproom Carriage House in Bedford on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m. Like a sporting event, it's a "round robin tournament with a single elimination." Play cornhole, help local charities and have fun! Murphy's will have a cash food and bar available. Find out more here: (Bedford Patch)
- Did you know that Bedford children should be tested for exposure to lead? State health officials warned that during the three years of the pandemic, 5,000 fewer children in the state were tested for lead exposure. Dr. Jonathan Ballard, chief medical officer for the Department of Health and Human Services, said "the threat to children is significant." He noted that "'older homes (and we have many older homes and historic buildings in Bedford) have a significant amount of lead-based paint, and that can cause exposure to children unknowingly." "Even small amounts can lead to serious health problems," he said. Find out more here: (WMUR)
- A shoutout to Providence College junior Jacque Harrington of Bedford, who "brought power to the lineup" with four hits in a game on Feb. 11 in the Frank Griffin Classic in DeLand, FL. The Providence College women's softball team will travel to Charleston, S. C. for the Buc Up! Tournament on Feb. 17-Feb. 19 in South Carolina. (Providence College Athletics)
