  1. A shoutout to Bob Alban of Bedford, who gave a $50,000 gift to establish the Montshire Advisors Scholarship for women at West Virginia University. Alban said his daughters inspired him to create the scholarship fund to encourage underserved women to work in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Alban said when he earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from WVU in 1995, "there were few women in the engineering program at the time." (WVU Today)
  2. State police said a car was speeding in Bedford on Dec. 20 at 4:32 a.m. Rishikesh Reddy Puntikuram, 22, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was arrested on charges of "suspension of vehicle registration, operating without a valid license, speeding 25 mph over the limit, lane control, and fail-yield emergency vehicle violations." The police report said the arrest took place in Bedford but didn't say where. Drive safely out there! (Patch)
  3. More people are going to urgent care in Bedford due to a surge in COVID-19 and the flu. Dr. Matt Dayno, director of emergency medicine at Elliot Hospital, said people are going to urgent care and emergency rooms out of concern about how serious their symptoms might become. Dr. Dayno said to "First isolate and manage your symptoms at home,” and consult with your primary care doctor. Seek out emergency care "when symptoms sound alarms and require immediate assessment or intervention," he added.
