Cauble: Why Are Republicans Afraid of Voters?
Bedford resident: The Republican legislature makes it difficult to get absentee ballot.
Republicans in the NH legislature passed the absentee voting bill that would require anyone applying for an absentee ballot to provide a photocopy of certain IDs or get their application for an absentee ballot notarized. Maybe not a problem for some people but think of an elderly person living alone, or those living with disabilities, or our military or civilians living overseas. This population may not have access to a copy machine and even if a notary is available, there may be a fee. Voters affected by this legislation have a valid reason to obtain a ballot and vote.
I am particularly aware of voting laws that affect the military. The first time I voted I was at a remote artillery unit in Korea. There were times that we did not have access to a copy machine and certainly not a notary. New Hampshire does not make it easy. Forty states have a web site allowing military to check voting status. New Hampshire does not. NH has the most restrictive voting laws in the country. South Dakota is the only other State with as tough voting requirements.
This law along with laws Republicans passed recently make the election system more difficult for election officials and voters to exercise their right to vote.
