CONCORD, NH — A man from Vermont is facing charges after being accused of wrong-way driving on Interstate 293 in Bedford on Saturday morning.

Just before 1 a.m., state police driving on the northbound side of the highway in Bedford saw a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes. The trooper turned on their emergency lights to stop the driver, identified later as Benjamin Mueller, 36, of White River Junction, VT.

Historical data shows the volume of customer transactions at the NH DMV is lower than average on Columbus Day. The holiday is also not a state-observed holiday.

“This annual training day is designed to sharpen skills for all DMV employees, including offering exceptional customer service every day, while also fostering their professional development and strengthening their preparedness for emergencies,” he said.

Auburn Man Dies After Crash With Dump Truck

A man from Auburn died late last month after a crash on Route 101 in Candia.

Around 6 a.m. on Sept. 24, state troopers were sent to the area of Mile Marker 67.2 on the eastbound side of the highway after an automatic crash notification alert from a cellphone. Passing drivers also called 911 and confirmed a crash between an SUV and a dump truck.

When troopers arrived, they found Good Samaritans removing a severely injured driver from a burning 2019 Nissan Rogue. They, along with troopers, rendered aid until EMTs arrived. Firefighters also extinguished the fire.

An investigation by the department’s Collision Analysis & Reconstruction and the Unmanned Aerial Systems units found Alexander C. Smith, 25, of Auburn, rear-ended a Mack truck, and his SUV caught on fire. He died at the scene.

Troopers were assisted by Auburn and Candia police as well as Auburn and Raymond firefighters, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is asked to contact Trooper Kevin LeDoux at kevin.p.ledoux@dos.nh.gov.
