Man Falls To His Death From New Hampshire Mountain While Taking Photos

The man's wife heard him yell as he fell from Mt. Willard. Rescue services and conservation officers rappeled to retrieve his body Saturday.

CONCORD, NH — New Hampshire Fish and Game were notified of a hiker falling from the summit of Mt. Willard Saturday.

The hiker, who was accompanied by his wife, was taking photos of the Crawford Notch area when the hiker’s wife heard her husband yell. She looked over and noticed him falling over the edge of the mountain down a steep cliff that extended to the bottom, approximately 800 feet. The woman called 911 for assistance due to the icy conditions and steepness of the terrain, according to conservation officers.

Conservation officers and members of Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) responded to the incident. MRS Rescue Technicians were able to rappel down the cliff and eventually located the hiker at approximately 2:30 p.m.

The hiker was found dead approximately 300 feet below the summit of Mt. Willard. MRS team members, assisted by conservation officers, were able to extract the victim from the face of the cliff and raise him to the summit of Mt. Willard. The victim was carried to the Mt. Willard trailhead parking area arriving at 6:45 p.m.

The victim's identity has not been released at this time, and the incident is being investigated by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
