NH Lake Winnipesaukee Rescue: NY Canoer Capsizes
New Hampshire State Police said a New York man canoeing on Lake Winnipesaukee without a life jacket rolled into the water.

MEREDITH, NH — A man from New York canoeing without a life jacket on Lake Winnipesaukee Sunday morning was rescued after authorities said he rolled into 90-foot waters. The 21-year-old man was paddling near Five Mile Island in Meredith at about 6:30 a.m. when a gust of wind blew the canoe over, according to New Hampshire State Police Lieutenant Crystal McLain.
"(The canoer) was not wearing a life jacket and was unable to right the vessel," McLain said in a statement. "He was in the water for approximately five minutes before a Good Samaritan saw him and pulled him from the water."
McLain added, "Marine Patrol wants to remind boaters to make sure that their vessels are equipped with life jackets ... Although it is highly recommended for all boaters to wear life jackets while on the water, New Hampshire law requires children under 13 years of age to wear one anytime that the boat is underway."
