NH Senate Leader Charged With Domestic Violence: I'm Not Guilty

New Hampshire Senate leader Senator Jeff Woodburn, a Democrat from Dalton, was charged with hitting and biting a woman.

CONCORD, NH — A prominent New Hampshire state senator charged with hitting and biting a woman pleaded not guilty Friday to a host of charges. Jeff Woodburn (pictured), 53, a Democrat serving as Senate minority leader, was arrested last week and charged with nine crimes, including domestic violence, assault and trespassing.

Governor Chris Sununu told Woodburn to resign but he has refused. Woodburn did step down from his leadership post.

New Hampshire Attorney General Gordon MacDonald said Woodburn allegedly threw a cup at an "intimate partner" and bit her on the arm.

Woodburn, of Dalton, represents New Hampshire's North Country. He is running unopposed in the September primary. The election is November 6.

"Senator Woodburn's morally reprehensible, violent behavior has no place in public service, or anywhere else," Sununu said in a statement. "Domestic violence will not be tolerated in New Hampshire."
