NH Wants Trump Challenger For Primary: Poll

NEW HAMPSHIRE — A majority of New Hampshire supports an alternative Republican candidate to President Trump in the 2020 NH primary, according to a poll released this weekend. The New Hampshire Journal poll, based on the opinions of 626 registered voters, also found 40 percent of Republicans support a Trump challenger. A majority of Republicans — 47 percent — support Trump for the GOP nomination.

"The fact that 40 percent of Republicans in an early and influential state like New Hampshire think a Trump primary challenge would be 'a good thing' should get the GOP’s attention," wrote Journal Politics Editor Michael Graham. "The fact that nearly 60 percent of unaffiliated voters — all of whom can also vote in the 2020 primary — agree raises the stakes even higher."

The New Hampshire Journal is a Republican-leaning political news outlet founded in 2014.

The Journal's poll mirrors a Morning Consult poll last week that found 55 percent of New Hampshire residents disapprove of Trump's performance. The Morning Consult poll found only 22 states now have a majority supporting Trump — a significant decrease from the 38 states at the start of his term.

The Granite State's apparent drop of support for Trump was illustrated in illegal fashion last week when someone smashed a Trump monument stone in Concord at the New Hampshire Presidential Primary Historic Marker. Police are still searching for the suspect. Trump won the 2016 New Hampshire primary and lost the state to Hillary Clinton by less than 1 percent on Election Day.
