The New Hampshire SPCA is now caring for more than 200 animals, with 61 new animals arriving in one weekend.

There are three ways for community members to help, including by participating in September's Matching Gift month, donating food, and helping to spread the word on social media, the New Hampshire SPCA said.

STRATHAM, NH — The New Hampshire SPCA took in eight dogs and nine cats from Jefferson Parish, Louisiana Sunday in an emergency transport following Hurricane Francine, officials said Monday.

"These 17 animals joined 44 others transported to the New Hampshire SPCA between Saturday and Sunday, bringing the number of pets in care to over 200," according to the SCPA, adding that they are seeking help with care and adoption.

The organization's executive director, Lisa Dennison, said that the BISSELL Pet Foundation coordinated and funded a transport flight of nearly 80 homeless cats and dogs from Louisiana to shelters and rescues in Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Seventeen of those animals were the cats and dogs newly brought to the New Hampshire SPCA.

"The timing of this transport was challenging," officials said, adding that the arrival came at the same time as the transport of 19 animals from Texas, 11 cats and kittens from the ASPCA, nine cats and a dog from another New Hampshire shelter, and four Friesen horses from a rescue in Vermont.

In total, 61 animals arrived at the New Hampshire SPCA Saturday and Sunday, "an exceptionally large intake for one weekend," according to officials.

"Overpopulation of adoptable animals in this country continues to rise and the New Hampshire SPCA is committed to helping to rehome as many animals as we are able," they added.

The animals will be held for the required quarantine period before they are prepared for adoption. They will be "medically checked and treated, and provided with healthy food, safe housing, and a chance to find a loving home," according to the organization.
