Five Things: Vote Could Come About WHS JAG, Adult Ed Programs

Two programs for at-risk students, the annual beach vote and more are among the Five Things You Need to Know Today.

Good morning, Hampton and North Hampton. Here are five things you need to know for Wednesday, March 27:

1. Get Out the Vote Friday: The annual Hampton Beach Village District elections will be held on Friday, March 29, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Hampton Beach fire station.

Voters will need to present a valid ID in order to cast a ballot. Friday's voting will be followed by the annual beach meeting, during which the budget for the upcoming year will be discussed.

2. Two Important Sessions Tonight: Both the Hampton and Winnacunnet school boards will meet tonight; Hampton at 7 at Hampton Town Hall, and Winnacunnet at 6:30 at Winnacunnet High School.

The Winnacunnet session will be preceded by a 5 p.m. work session, during which the board will discuss the Winnacunnet Adult High School and Jobs for Americas Graduates programs. Funding for these programs was restored after heartfelt stories and pleas during the annual school deliberative session, and a decision of some kind could be made tonight.

3. Today’s Featured Fun: The free Ladies' Night Out film series at Lane Memorial Library continues at 5:15 p.m. with a showing of "Anna Karenina."

4. This Day in History: On this day in 1973, actor Marlon Brando declined the Academy Award for Best Actor for his career-reviving performance in "The Godfather."

Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather attended the ceremony in Brando’s place, stating that the actor “very regretfully” could not accept the award, as he was protesting Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in film.

After Brando’s name was announced as Best Actor, presenter Roger Moore (star of several James Bond films) attempted to hand the Oscar to Littlefeather, but she brushed it aside, saying that Brando could not accept the award.

Littlefeather read a portion of a lengthy statement Brando had written, the entirety of which was later published in the press, including The New York Times. “The motion picture community has been as responsible as any,” Brando wrote, “for degrading the Indian and making a mockery of his character, describing his as savage, hostile and evil.”
