Five Things: Slain North Hampton Man Getting 'Hero' Award and a Benefit

Good morning, Hampton and North Hampton. Here are five things you need to know for Thursday, March 7:

 

1. Remembering Michael Maloney: A day filled with heartfelt thoughts about a local police chief who gave his life while saving others starts off with a Red Cross "Heroes" awards breakfast (during which two Hampton Beach lifeguards will also receive recognition) in his honor.

Then, at 4:30 p.m., local law enforcement will hold a press conference at a North Hampton restaurant to announce details of a special St. Patrick's Day event in Maloney's honor.

2. Today’s Featured Fun: Big business and leader awards, as well as a big trip, will be handed out tonight during the annual Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce awards dinner.

Also, the sixth-ranked Winnacunnet High School girls' basketball team faces No. 3 Bedford in the final four at Southern New Hampshire University at 5:30 p.m.

3. What Else Is Happening Today? Quite a bit, actually.

Tonight is the last night of Interstate 95 construction closures/delays.

Also, the first of two Hampton School District forums about a common start time for all SAU 90 schools is tonight, the North Hampton School Renovation Committee will meet at 6 p.m. in the school's library, the newly-revitalized Hampton Academy and Winnacunnet High School Alumni Association is holding their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. at Winnacunnet High School, the WHS wrestling banquet starts at 6 p.m. in the school's dining hall, and there's a Chem-Free parent meeting at 7 p.m. in the school's library.

4. This Day in History: On this day in 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell received a patent for his revolutionary new invention — the telephone.
